SLO, Santa Barbara county school districts partner with local Medi-Cal plan to revamp mental health services on campuses | News | San Luis Obispo

Twenty-one percent of San Luis Coastal Unified School District (SLCUSD) ninth graders reported that they seriously considered suicide in 2021.

Another 37 percent said they felt chronically sad or hopeless—a number that has steadily ticked up in recent years, according to California Healthy Kids survey results.

“Student behavioral and mental health needs have increased, and nowhere has it been more clear than coming back from the pandemic,” SLCUSD Student Support Services Executive Director Janet Gould told New Times. “There’s just a need, and we need to come up with a response.”

Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune partners with Novant Health to launch psychiatric residency program | News

Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune has partnered with Novant Health and others to bring a new psychiatric residency program to southeastern North Carolina.

According to a recent press release from Novant Health, a 2022 study that evaluated access to mental health care nationwide ranked North Carolina in the bottom third, along with other southern states.

The release said that rural areas, in particular, struggle with reduced numbers.

“We know untreated mental illness leads to multiple bad outcomes, ranging from reduced quality of life and problems at work and home to substance use, overdoses, homelessness, imprisonment and suicide,” said Wilmington-based Psychiatrist with Novant Health Dr. Julia Triggs in the release.

Triggs has helped lead planning efforts for the residency.

Novant Health has partnered with not only Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune, but also UNC Health and UNC School of Medicine to launch the program in order to train more physicians in

Former HOD, director arrested for Kimberley’s mental health facility scandal

Police have confirmed via an official statement that a 65-year-old former head of department for Roads and Public Works in the Northern Cape and a company director were apprehended on Tuesday by the Hawks Serious Corruption Investigation team.

They are set to appear in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court on charges including contravening the Public Finance Management Act, fraud, corruption and money laundering.

SAPS spokesperson Nomthandazo Mnisi explained that the charges stem from a controversial project initiated back in 2003, where the Northern Cape Department of Health and Department of Roads and Public Works collaborated as implementing agents to construct a state-of-the-art mental health facility in Kimberley.

Senator Michael Hasting ensures degraded former Tinley Park Mental Health Center to be revitalized into a sports park in new law

State Senator Michael E. Hastings spearheaded a measure through the Senate that would allow Tinley Park’s Park District to renovate a degraded building into a sports park and recreational space for residents in the community to utilize.



“Tinley Park is a great place to raise a family, yet all this empty space has been ignored for over a decade,” said Hastings (D-Frankfort).

“This has been an eyesore for the community, and something needs to be done about it.”

The former Tinley Park Mental Health Center site located on a 280-acre plot of land has been vacant since 2012.

Rules still punish military widows for remarrying by slashing benefits

For Rebecca Morrison Mullaney, falling in love again after the death of her Army husband Ian is costing about $42,000 a year.

That’s because existing federal rules cut off military benefits to military widows and widowers who get remarried before age 55. Living unmarried with a new partner doesn’t carry the same penalty. Morrison Mullaney said forcing individuals like her to stay in relationship limbo to keep getting their family’s deserved support is a cruel twist on an already difficult situation.

“I love being married …. It’s a beautiful and special thing,” Morrison Mullaney told the Military Times. “I didn’t want my first marriage to end, and I was open to having that again after Ian’s death.” She feels like she’s being punished for finding a new partner.

Be Mindful: The mental health effects of Social Media use

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, Calif. – The U.S Surgeon General warned social media can have a “profound risk” on the mental health and well-being of children and adolescents. A U.C. Santa Barbara professor said despite the potential risks, we should also look at the benefits of social media.

The advisory released Tuesday said children and adolescents are commonly exposed to extreme, inappropriate, and harmful content, and those who spend more than three hours a day on social media face double the risk of poor mental health including experiencing symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy cites in his advisory that despite 95% of teenagers’ use of social media, there is still not enough evidence to determine if social media use is sufficiently safe for them.

The advisory cites studies that show social media may perpetuate body dissatisfaction, poor sleep quality, and addiction to certain social media platforms.
